Gideon Massland

Director
MVRDV, Netherlands

Gideon Maasland joined MVRDV in 2016, bringing over 15 years of experience from leading Dutch architectural firms. As Director, he leads MVRDV’s Studio Rotterdam, specializing in large-scale, complex projects. Maasland’s hands-on approach, informed by his background in architecture, carpentry, and construction methodology, ensures meticulous attention to both design and process. His direct involvement in construction sites ensures that design goals are met with precision and quality control, contributing to the success of his projects.

Maasland has played a key role in notable projects, including the 75,000m² Valley (2022) in Amsterdam, the 61,800m² Grotius Towers (2022) in The Hague, and the renovation of Tripolis Park (2023). Other significant works include Crystal Houses (2016), Prague Airport, Theater aan de Parade in Den Bosch, and the Rotterdam Rooftop Walk (2022). Currently, Maasland is overseeing various international projects, such as the 95,000m² Shenzhen Terraces, the RAI masterplan in Amsterdam, and new offices for ANWB in The Hague, along with projects across the Netherlands, the UK, Taiwan, and Eastern Europe.

The work of MVRDV is exhibited and published worldwide and has received numerous international awards. More than three hundred architects, designers and urbanists develop projects in a multi-disciplinary, collaborative design process that involves rigorous technical and creative investigation. MVRDV has an in-house Climate Team, which consults with design teams across the entire company to ensure the sustainability and resilience of our work. As a group of specialists, MVRDV NEXT develops and implements computational workflows and new technologies to rationalise designs, speed up processes, and make projects more efficient and adaptable in the face of change.
